SOUTH SHIELDS (4-4-2): Norton 7; Baxter 6, Shaw 7, Morse 6, Callaghan 7; Briggs 6, Arca 6 (Stevenson 67, 5), Smith 7, Pattison 8; Finnigan 7, Cogden 7. Subs (not used): Storey, Lough, Nicholson, Stephenson, Richardson, Sullivan, Connell.

HARTLEPOOL UNITED (4-3-3):

7 Loach: Not for the first time this season, he was vital to securing a victory for Pools. Safe, confident and a key man;

7 Ledger: Centre-half by trade asked to fill in at right-back at short notice and saw plenty of the ball

6 Harrison: Mixed fortunes; first-half poor and caught out for the opening goal, but stepped up in the second-half and was dominant in repelling Shields at the end

6 Laing: Like partner Harrison, was below par in the first 45 minutes and got better and more confident as the game went on

8 Deverdics: A peach of a free-kick to win the game for Pools, enjoyed the chance to push further forward when Adams was introduced;

5 Woods: Roamed around looking for possession, but did a lot of his work deeper in the opening half, before being on the fringe of it in a midfield diamond

6 Featherstone: Tried to keep Pools ticking along, but like Woods was probably forced too deep looking for the ball

4 Munns: Given a welcome start but failed to make the most of his chance. Rarely got chance to show what he can do and replaced;

7 Franks: Grafted all afternoon out wide, saw a lot of the ball and teed up Rodney for the leveller

6 Oates: Didn’t get a great deal of support from his team-mates and often isolated in the middle up front

6 Rodney: Got Pools level with a tidy finish. Started positively, getting the better of his opponent, but then faded as Shields got on top.

Subs:

Adams (for Munns 60, brought on for his defensive nous to keep hold of dangerman Pattison)

Hawkins (for Rodney 75)

(not used): Richardson, Thorne, Catterick (gk), Simpson.

MAN OF THE MATCH Matty Pattison – struck the bar from distance, and was always Shields’ biggest threat cutting in from the left
