DURHAM will have Brydon Carse and James Weighell fit to bowl in the four-day Second X1 Championship final against Middlesex, starting at Emirates Riverside tomorrow.

Carse impressed in the first team for the first six matches until both he and Weighell broke down at Trent Bridge at the end of May.

Carse suffered a recurrence of the foot problem which kept him out for the second half of last season and coach Jon Lewis said: “We will have to manage his workload while his body strengthens. The impact of playing in six games was probably too much.”

Weighell developed a lower leg injury after taking nine wickets in the previous match at Edgbaston.

Following the release of Jamie Harrison, the injuries had left the seam resources a little thin and another left-armer, Sam Grant, was drafted in for the last second team game.

He is now in Sri Lanka with a Loughborough University squad, but he has finished his studies and Durham plan to have him back for nets during the winter.

Josh Coughlin can expect to play, along with another seam-bowling all-rounder, Washington's Matt Potts, with second team coach Neil Killeen rating him highly.

“For an 18-year-old he has shown a lot of character,” he said. “Averages are not everything. How many games a player has won for Durham tells more of a story.

“Second team cricket is first and foremost about development, but it's also about how to win games. We want that to become a habit.

“We just missed out in the one-dayers. We had to go all the way to Arundel again for the T20 finals, which is crazy. That's something the ECB need to look at.”

Ryan Pringle has recovered from his hand injury and, if not required for first team duty, will provide the spin option alongside left-armer George Harding, who was brought up from Cheshire last year.

He will be 20 next month and is seen as a better prospect than Gurman Randhawa, who has been released, with Killeen saying: “He's tall and gets a lot of bounce. He also gets stuck in with the bat; he just needs to work on his mobility in the field.

“There will be a number of academy lads playing in the final and it's a good opportunity for them to perform on a bigger stage. We were very keen to have the match at Riverside and hopefully we'll have a good crowd.”
