CRAIG HIGNETT thinks latest signing Lewis Alessandra has further boosted Hartlepool United’s goal scoring threat after returning to pre-season training.

Alessandra was confirmed as Pools’ eighth new arrival of the summer and he provides a variety of options across the frontline.

The former Rochdale forward, released at Spotland, has had spells with Oldham, Plymouth, and finished last season on loan at York City, but now Hignett has persuaded him to head for Victoria Park.

The Northern Echo:

The 27-year-old, from Manchester, will link up with his new team-mates at Durham's Maiden Castle training ground on Thursday and Hartlepool boss Hignett is convinced he has brought in more firepower.

Hignett told the club's website: “Lewis has got all traits we were looking for – he’s a good footballer, he scores goals he’s intelligent and he’s ambitious.

“He can play up front as striker, just off as a number ten or even from wide but he’s another one who is forward-thinking and can add something to the squad.

“He scored a lot of goals during his time at Plymouth and he did well while he was on loan at York so we are pleased he’s decided to come and join us.

“I wanted to add goals to the squad and I’ve gone out and tried to find players who will fit into how we play and what we want to do – and I think everyone we’ve signed will do that.”
