SCOTT Fenwick is back at Hartlepool United - and could figure in the side at the weekend.

The striker moved to Tranmere last month, but his loan until the end of the season has been ended early after he made only three substitute outings for the National League play-off chasers.

With Pools' top scorer Billy Paynter still sidelined by a hamstring injury, and set to miss Saturday's trip to Oxford, Fenwick has trained with Pools this morning at Maiden Castle.

And he is among those playing for their futures at Victoria Park.

Boss Craig Hignett said: “Billy is still being looked at and assessed. Scott is back, loan from Tranmere cut short so he’s another body to have back around the place too.

“All these lads who haven’t figured are fighting for their futures. It’s up to them to make me see they are worth a spot next year.''

One player out of contention for a chance is centre-half Scott Harrison, who broke a metatarsal in training on Monday and is out of the final three games.

Hignett added: “I feel a bit for Scotty – he’s been patient and on the fringe and it was time when he could come in and have a chance to impress. I feel gutted for him.''

Saturday's opponents Oxford have eight players who are doubts for the game.

Michael Appleton, boss of the promotion-chasers, said: “We have six or seven players out injured who you could argue would be in the starting XI – that’s how stretched we are.

“The time between now and the weekend is massive, there is no doubt about that. But if they’re not right, they’re not right.

“We’ve got to work ever so hard to get the players ready, icing them round the clock, and see where we get with them.”
