LEWIS HAWKINS has signed a new contract with Hartlepool United.

The midfielder, 22, has been a mainstay in the first-team under Craig Hignett of late, and has been rewarded for his impressive performances with a new deal.

Now into his fifth year at Victoria Park after being signed from Horden CW, Hawkins has long been on the fringes of the team without making his mark and has twice been on loan at Spennymoor.

But that has changed this year, and, after scoring his first senior goals in the 3-1 win at Barnet on March 5, he has started every game.

His first goal, a spectacular 25-yard volley was voted the club’s goal of the month for March.

“He’s been fantastic since I came to the club,” said Hignett. “His attitude, commitment and willingness to learn and play the way we’re playing has been brilliant; his energy has been first class and that’s alongside the quality he has so he’s been a very effective player for us.

“It says a lot that he’s one of the first people we’ve gone to with a new contract offer; since he came back in to the team for that game at Barnet he hasn’t looked back.

“Hopefully he’s going to be a very important player for us so I am delighted he’s shown his commitment by signing the contract.”

And Hawkins has been joined in signing a new deal by goalkeeper Adam Bartlett. He started the season as first-choice, but has been on the bench since Trevor Carson returned to the side after injury in October.

Hignett added: “Trevor is probably the best keeper in League Two but Adam isn’t far behind,” Hignett insisted.

“His attitude and professionalism has been a shining light to everyone at the club.''
