HARTLEPOOL UNITED (4-4-2):

5 Carson: Beaten to the ball for the opening goal, will feel he should have done better. Nothing could be done from his point of view for the second;

4 Harrison: Looked what he was – a left-footed centre-half playing out of position at right-back. Given a tough time by Thomas and he won’t be playing there again

6 Bates: Read the game in his usual manner, in a steady performance in the middle of the back four

6 Jackson: Compliments Bates well, but will be disappointed in the manner which goals two and three arrived

5 Carroll: Pools’ weakest area was on his flank, as both the left-back and left winger failed to make much impact;

6 Naismith: Went looking for possession, drifting inside the pitch for the ball. Didn’t get enough balls over for Moore’s liking, but hit the bar with a late free-kick

5 Gray: Two goals last week, shackled and denied the chance to get forward this time. Wasn’t his day not for the want of trying

5 Magnay: Overran in midfield, for all his effort, honesty and frustration in there, Pools were second best in the middle of the park

4 Oyenuga: Two goals in two games before this, but never threatened the Stags’ defenders. Didn’t play with confidence after his recent spurt;

5 Mandron: Unlucky to see his early shot pushed against the bar, but didn’t hold the ball up enough or get at the home centre-halves

5 Bingham: Given a start going back to his old club, and was crowded out on most occasions, the odd burst of pace chasing passes aside.

Subs:

Oates (for Oyenuga 57): Brought a bit more energy to the flank, but Pools were trailing after his arrival 6

Fenwick (for Mandron 69): Little impact when introduced 5

(not used): Walker, Bartlett (gk), Oates, Featherstone, Fenwick, Jones, Smith.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Nathan Thomas, Stockton-born one-time Sunderland winger was a direct and regular threat on the left
