Goals:

0-1: Walton pen (65, crisply struck low to Carson’s right side)

0-2: Murphy (74, tapped in from close range after Pools were opened up on the left)

1-2: Paynter (80, header from deep when he met Banton’s corner)

Bookings: Harrold (unsportsmanlike behaviour 70); Murphy (dissent 84), Woods (foul 90)

Referee: Mark Heywood (Wakefield): No thought went into the red card and penalty call – and made plenty of other mistakes 3

Attendance: 3,262

Entertainment: 1/5

HARTLEPOOL UNITED (4-4-2):

7 Carson: A busy day as Pools were cut open too often – made some important first-half stops to at least keep his side level

5 Hendrie: Steady away on the right again, moved to centre-half in Harrison’s absence

4 Harrison: Beaten too easily for the penalty incident as Murphy got in behind him outside the penalty area

5 Okuonghae: Looked like three games in seven days was a lot to ask after missing all the season so far

5 Jones: Game ended early when he suffered a facial cut which needed stitches;

7 OATES: the only player to emerge with credit from Moore and at least his first-half performance was energetic

4 Featherstone: Didn’t get a grip of the game in the middle when it was there to make the most of Walton’s lack of mobility

3 Walker: Three starts in a week and it may be a while before he’s seen in the starting XI again. A deflating week

4 Carroll: Replaced at half-time, and while he’s playing further forward on the left wing, he’s not getting into the danger area enough;

6 Bingham: Worked away with his energy and movement coming to the fore when Pools were down to ten men, denied a goal by a goalkeeper’s tackle

4 Paynter: Needs to show more frontline authority. Service hasn’t been great and he scored again, but there’s got to be more from him.

Subs:

Woods (for Walker 46): Offered a bit more in midfield and really should have scored to make it 1-1 after a bursting run from deep 6

Banton (for Carroll 46): Brought some drive and forward thinking, delivered the corner for Paynter’s header, but delivery was hit and miss 6

Duckworth (for Jones 61): A welcome return to the side, albeit at left back 5
