David Mirfin won’t be rejoining Hartlepool United, despite the defender being made available by Scunthorpe United.

The centre-half spent the second half of last season on loan at Pools and boss Ronnie Moore has a number of injury concerns ahead of tomorrow’s opener with Morecambe.

He is pondering making a loan move, but Mirfin won’t be returning – for now at least.

“Everybody tells me on Twitter what I should be doing, do they really think I haven’t tried?’’ asked Moore. “I have spoken with Scunthorpe but he played last week for them.

“They are in no rush to see him leave, they have a one or two little knocks and I wouldn’t be surprised if he was in their squad on Saturday.

“At this present moment in time we have tried but Mirf is going to be a no, no.’’

Centre-half Dan Jones is likely to miss out against Morecambe with a back injury and Moore added: “Hand on heart there are four or five of the players struggling for the weekend.

“We are lucky in a way that we have a biggish squad but it is a worry at this present time.

“We have tried to get people in yesterday and one minute we had them, then the next we didn’t, but we still have enough cover.

“It is frustrating after the pre-season but it is not a lot you can do about it.

“We have had a fantastic pre-season, without any and then when it comes so close you pick up one or two.

“We have enough to adapt to the system we want to play though.’’

And while he’s had no luck on the transfer front, Moore is ready to put pen to paper on one deal – that of his own.

His current deal runs out in December, but new chairman Gary Coxall said when he took over that new contracts for both Moore and assistant Sam Collins were a priority.

Moore said at this morning’s press conference: “Everything has been sorted, I just need to speak to the chairman today.

“I would imagine that would be done before Saturday.”
