Goal:

1-0: Summerfield (67, ran through the Pools midfield and his speculative shot deflected off Mirfin to divert past stranded Flinders)

Bookings: Coulson (13, foul); Harrison (15, foul); Austin (60, foul)

Sending-off: Winfield (45, serious foul play)

Referee: Keith Stroud (Gloucester): One major decision, to send off Winfield, was probably the wrong one and he constantly infuriated the home side 4

Attendance: 5,424

Entertainment: 3/5

YORK CITY (3-5-2): Ingham 7; McCombe 7, Winfield 6, Lowe 8; Halliday 7, Coulson 5 (Ilesanmi 67, 5), Summerfield 8, PENN 8, Zubar 6; Hyde 8, Coulthirst 6 (Platt 81). Subs (not used): Mooney, McCoy, Montrose, Miller, O’Hanlon

HARTLEPOOL UNITED (3-5-2):

6 Flinders: So close to being the hero at the end when he almost connected with a header to score. Could do nothing about the goal, such was the size of the deflection;

6 Harrison: Not one of his more dominant games – the way York played was on the deck and counter-attacking which gave little opportunity to attack the ball in his normal manner

6 Mirfin: Cruel deflection brought the game’s only goal, but like Harrison didn’t assert himself like he normally does

6 D Jones: Tried to get Pools moving forward on the left side of defence and kept his discipline and shape throughout;

5 Duckworth: Didn’t get the better of his opposite number in Halliday, who seemed to dictate what the Pools player did too often

4 Tshibola: His most disappointing display for Pools since arriving – never got close enough to Summerfield when he ran through for the goal and his languid style wasn’t what was needed

7 FEATHERSTONE: Pools best performer – saw more of the ball in midfield than anyone and tried to prompt the side with his passing at the hub of midfield

5 Walker: Villian in the eyes of the home crowd after the sending-off. Didn’t have enough constant impact on the game before being replaced

6 Austin: Created one of the best openings with a surge into the area in the second half – one of the few occasions Pools penetrated the home defence;

4 Hugill: A welcome starter after his eye injury the previous game, but never got any success against the home defenders, crowded out and made little impression

6 Franks: Didn’t get much chance in the game to run beyond the deep-lying home defence. Did create a good opening for Hugill in the first half with a low ball from the right.

Subs:

Hawkins (for Walker 70): Tried to get forward, but like his team-mates, openings were scarce 6

Fenwick (for Austin 80)

J Jones (for Duckworth 90)

(not used): Maxted (gk), Harewood, Nelson-Addy, Richards

MAN OF THE MATCH Russell Penn – always busy in midfield and did the job of two men in the centre of the park in stopping Pools playing after the sending-off
