SCOTT FENWICK packed in his job as a civil engineer to become a professional footballer. Now he’s out to lay the foundations and cement a Football League future at Hartlepool United.

The striker, signed by former boss Paul Murray from Dunston in the Northern League, scored on his debut against York in November and nabbed his second career goal at the weekend.

As lost as he appeared on his previous start against Morecambe, he was determined and positive this time against Cheltenham.

He formed a good partnership with Rakish Bingham, his strength and workrate complimenting the loanees pace and movement.

Both were on the scoresheet in a much-needed win and positive performance.

"It has been mixed emotions for me since stepping up to become a professional,’’ he admitted. "It has been a massive learning curve, mentality more than anything else.

"When times are tough it is about how you deal with it and pick yourself up.

"The game against Cheltenham, those are the types of game I enjoy.

"It is a dream job for me still.

"A Saturday night, to go away with a clean sheet, a goal and a win. Perfect. That is what I want to be doing every week.’’

And he added: “Me and Rash have hit it off, me him and Tish (Aaron Tshibola).

"Even though we are young lads we need to learn quickly and get a partnership going.

"With a goal each I'm sure the gaffer will be pleased with us.’’

Pools remain cut adrift at the bottom of the league: "I have never been used to a scrap before.

"I am used to being at the top end, albeit further down the leagues, but if every player puts in a shift and shows aggression we won't lose many games.

"Shrewsbury are doing well but if we can show the determination and fight then I'm sure we can get something."
