PAUL MURRAY can be fairly satisfied with his transfer dealings as Hartlepool United manager.
Appointed boss five weeks ago, Murray has made eight signings, with two ready to make their debuts today.
Pools, bottom of the table, take on Wycombe, top of League Two at Victoria Park
Matteo Lonzani was signed from Cambridge in midweek, a direct replacement for Scott Harrison who returned to Sunderland after his loan spell ended.
And on Thursday, ahead of the transfer window closing for a month, he landed Matty Dolan on loan from Bradford City.
Two other deals didn’t happen, but Murray admitted: “We are looking at bringing in players to various positions.
“I wouldn’t have expected to [re-build the squad] in the middle of the season but I have had to address it.
“I felt I had to address it because we needed a stronger squad.
“That age gap needed bridging for one thing, hence Matteo coming in who is 26 and has a bit of experience and nous playing the game.
“That is where I have tried to address it.”
Murray worked with Lonzani at Oldham last season, before the Italian turned down a contract extension in favour of a move to the Championship and a short-term deal at Yeovil.
“He’s an old-fashioned Italian centre-half, who gets too tight at times unfortunately,’’ said Murray. “He wins his tackles, wins his headers and he has good recovery powers. If things get bin behind him he is quick enough to get back.
Both Lonzani and Dolan will start today, as Pools try to upset the odds and turn over the Chairboys.
Pools blew the chance to record a welcome win last weekend, when they collapsed in ten second-half minutes to gift York City victory.
Murray has gone over the game with his players this week and, while he’s still seeking his first Football League win as manager, he is sure it’s not far away.
“This is a game to look forward to, bottom against top and it’s happened before that the bottom team beats the top team – I’ve done it myself as a player,’’ he mused.
“We have had the lads in on Thursday morning, going over the goals we have conceded in the last four league games – and looking at it, they are all individual errors. No-one has cut through us, the last goal against York apart when we were on the front foot.
“Individual errors have been a real disappointment.
“The lads have always been bright and confident, training has been good but we have to take it into a weekend. We have to do everything at 100 per cent, everything about the game, cover all your bases.’’
And Murray, with his side taking root at the bottom, admitted: “Of course I am worried about the gap, it’s six points. We have discussed it on Thursday morning and we are worried about it. But it’s about individual errors, cut those out and we will score goals.
“We have been working hard this week on it, making it basic and simple in what we do. The onus is on us at home to get a result.
“A win would boost us all, that’s what it’s all about. They are top, we are bottom, let’s turn it around. It’s going to be a real difficult game, but we will have a go.’’
Among his new signings is Scott Fenwick, the striker signed from Dunston. He scored on his debut as a professional footballer last week and is relishing his chance in the full-time game.
“Scotty Fenwick’s attitude is brilliant. I’ve seen that when I’ve watched him play. He’s working hard in the gym, he’s doing extra work, he’s training hard and he’s even an example to our professionals.
“They all work hard, but he’s really got the bit between his teeth, determined to make a career in professional football.
“Wycombe are in form, I was speaking to their gaffer at the York game and he is loving it.
“I want to see Scotty in the 18-yard box, in the penalty area and I know he wants to make it, but I want him him to calm his temperament down a bit as we need him on the pitch. His commitment, desire and application are great. He scored on his debut, long may it continue.’’
Pools: Flinders; Richards, Bates, Lanzoni, Austin; Dolan, Featherstone, Walker; Franks, Harewood, Fenwick.
