HARTLEPOOL UNITED slumped to a humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Carlisle – and dropped to the bottom of the Football League in the process.

On this performance – and recent form – it’s hard to see them getting away from there in the coming weeks and months.

Pools have two wins to their name this season and a goal difference of minus 12. Form of that nature only means one thing.

And the crowd turned up the pressure on manager Colin Cooper as the two late goals arrived.

Pools could have been three down after ten minutes, a mix up between Scott Flinders and Matthew Bates almost brought a comical own goal, before the keeper made two fine saves, one from a close range Beck header.

Charlie Wyke had half a chance of an opener for Pools but lost his way in the box and Marlon Harewood volleyed over.

But the Cumbrians started the second half with two clear openings, Rigg sweeping wide and Potts heading straight at Flinders.

Pools had a rare chance when Franks had a shot saved on 53 minutes, but 60  seconds later they were trailing.

A long throw was found by Rigg in the area who bundled in.

Pools had a penalty shout knocked back on 78 minutes, when the ball hit defender Archibald-Henville on the hand in the area.

But they were two down on 83 minutes when Elliott was picked out by Potts, who slid in from 12 yards.

And on 89 minutes the misery was compounded when Beck turned in from close range.
