Goals:
1-0: Wyke (5, picked out by Franks and picked his spot to roll low across the keeper)
2-0: Walker (79, strong run from halfway was rewarded with a close range tap-in to meet Compton’s cross)
Bookings: Wesolowski (45, foul), Clark (49, diving), Harrison (74, unsporting behaviour), Collins (74, unsporting behaviour), Walker (78, foul)
Referee: Jeremy Simpson (Carnforth): Not the first time he’s had a woeful afternoon at Victoria Park. Weak at times and then tries to be authorative at the wrong times 3
Attendance: 3,368
Entertainment: 4/5
HARTLEPOOL UNITED (4-4-2):
6 Flinders: Very well protected by his defence, but he did his job with confidence and was well positioned to keep out the long-range shots
5 Parnaby: Started firmly enough in his preferred position at right-back but game was ended by a worrying hamstring injury
7 Bates: Got his share of headers away and his reading of defensive situations was impeccable. Looked like the defender with pedigree he is
7 Harrison: Slotted in well on his first start since returning on loan from Sunderland. Offers a good balance to the back four and was strong throughout
7 Austin: Gave nothing away at left-back. Soon got the better of his man, forcing Gayle to hobble off claiming injury, and then had little bother against his woeful replacement Grandison;
8 Compton: A flying machine on the left wing. Full of confidence after starting the game so well. Swung over a number of quality crosses from wide
7 Walker: Got about midfield well and charged forward in style to finish the game off with Pools’ second goal from close range
7 Miller: Played with more adventure, getting further forward than he has been and really got about the opposition midfield
8 Brobbel: Full of pace and his direct running was way too much for the Shrews defenders. Should have been awarded two penalties after being felled in the area;
7 Wyke: Two goals in three games and, for those seeing him for the first time since his last loan spell, his development and progress was clear
8 Franks: Wants to play as a striker and, if he can perform with this vigour, there’s a role for him up top.
Sub:
Holden (for Compton 90)

SHREWSBURY TOWN (3-5-2): Leutwiler 5; Goldson 6, Ellis 6, Knight-Percival 6; Gayle 4 (Grandison 17, 3), Wesolowski 6, Woods 6, Clark 6, Demetriou 4 (Mangan 54, 5); Collins 5, Vernon 5 (Akpa-Akpro 54, 5). Subs (not used): Vincent, Lawrence, Griffith, Burton (gk).
MAN OF THE MATCH
JACK Compton – a lot of Pools players to choose from, but Compton delivered constantly from start to finish.
