TALKS are continuing to save Darlington Football Club from liquidation despite the cancellation of today’s moneyspinning home game.
Quakers fans’ groups met for a third day in a row yesterday in an attempt to thrash out an agreement about the best way forward.
The meeting followed talks between members of Darlington Football Club Rescue Group (DFCRG) and administrator Harvey Madden yesterday morning.
No one involved in the discussions was prepared to comment, but The Northern Echo understands that the talks were constructive.
Two proposals to form a community group to take over the club have been drawn up.
The first, put together by the rescue group, has the backing of Darlington MP Jenny Chapman.
An alternative proposal has also been put forward by a new group, Darlington Supporters United (DSU), which has the support of Darlington Supporters’ Trust and has received help from experts in community ownership of sports clubs from Supporters Direct.
The formation of Darlington Supporters United (DSU) was announced on Tuesday.
The group said it was made up of supporters’ organisations and individual supporters looking at moving the club into community ownership.
On Wednesday, Mrs Chapman and Mark Meynell, from DFCRG, urged all supporters’ groups to work together and back the rescue group proposal.
It was hoped yesterday that administrator Harvey Madden would issue a statement on the latest developments. However, no update is now expected until Monday.
Today’s game against Wrexham was cancelled yesterday morning because of a frozen pitch.
The decision was made by the match referee following a pitch inspection.
The cancellation means Darlington may not have a home game until March.
The club has three away games planned later this month.
A fixture against Luton Town due to take place at the end of the month has been postponed following their progression into the next round of the FA Trophy.
The Quakers had hoped to arrange a home fixture with Durham City today on their all-weather pitch, however this was also unplayable.
