HEREFORD United last night claimed they have signed Darlington left-back Dominik Werling.

The German has wanted to leave Quakers for several weeks and the Bulls say he has teamed up with Simon Davey – the man who brought him to the North-East in May.

But before Werling had made a competitive appearance he told Darlington that he wished to leave, with manager Mark Cooper saying that the left-back had reasoned that his mother back home in Germany was ill.

The 27-year-old spent last week on trial at a club Belgium, but no deal materialised and it comes as no surprise to see him join up with Davey who also signed him when manager of Barnsley.

Davey said: “Dominic is a left-sided player who can fill many roles and this is what we’ve been looking for.

“I worked with him at Barnsley and feel he has the qualities and character which we need to make Hereford a real force.”

Werling had a one-year contract at The Northern Echo Arena but Hereford say the player bought “himself out of his contract and became a free agent in the hope of finding a new club.”

Ridding Werling from the wage bill may free up funds for Cooper to bring in reinforcements that could be required given the number of injuries he is having to cope with.

Tommy Wright has been ruled out of Saturday’s trip to Eastbourne Borough with the injury sustained at Barrow on Monday evening.

The 25-year-old limped off with a calf strain midway through the first half of the 1-1 draw at Holker Street but it is unclear how long Wright will be out for.

He was replaced by Richard Offiong, who has just over a week remaining on his loan from Carlisle United, though Cooper will hope Liam Hatch quickly returns from an ankle knock.

He sustained the injury in the win over Gateshead last Saturday and was unable to play on Monday so joined several others in the treatment room including Kevin Austin, Ian Miller, Gareth Waite, Michael Brough and John McReady.

Despite the number of players unavailable due to injury, Cooper is not bemoaning Quakers’ luck.

“It’s frustrating but I’m not one of them that makes excuses and blames things,” he said. “All I’ll say is that the more points we get now, the stronger we’ll be when we get those players back.”

Meanwhile, Darlington and Barrow are awaiting to discover whether referee Lee Metcalfe includes Monday’s post-match tunnel bust-up in his report to the Football Association.
