WINGER Chris Moore has swapped the prospect of a Wembley appearance for a relegation battle at the foot of the Football League after signing for Darlington.

The 26-year-old will be in the squad at Northampton tomorrow after leaving the FA Vase holders who later this month play in the semi-finals of the same competition.

But Moore, having lifted the trophy at Wembley last season, will not be involvedin the skilltrainingltd Northern League’s side bid to return to the home of football having become the 23rd player signed by manager Steve Staunton.

He played his final game for Bay in Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Newcastle United reserves in the Northumberland Senior Cup semi-final and trained with Darlington yesterday.

Staunton is pleased with Moore’s decision and says that having already played at the national stadium may have been a factor in his move.

“I wasn’t expecting it but from the boy’s point of view he has been given a chance at a professional club and he played at Wembley last year,”

said Staunton. “Maybe he’s thinking ‘I’ve done that already, let’s move on and see if I can hack it at a higher level’.

“I’m looking forward to seeing him in action. He’s hungry and determined.

“I wouldn’t say he’s the tallest but he’s not going to be shrugged off the ball easily and he’s got plenty of pace – I wouldn’t like to mark him I can tell you that.

“What I really like about him is that he’s got a good variety of crossing. For somebody playing in a lower league his variation of crossing is excellent.

“Not only that, he actually picks a team-mate out, he has a look up. Whereas I look at League Two players, and sometimes in the Championship, some people just put balls into a general area but Chris actually has a look up to see what he’s going to do.

“I went to see him play a couple of times and I thought the pace of the game was as quick, if not quicker than League Two games, but he handled that well and fitnesswise I don’t think there’s any problems.”

Moore has signed a contract lasting until the end of 2010-11 season and becomes the third player plucked from the Northern League.

Already at the Arena are Nathan Mulligan and Gareth Waite, who joined from Norton and Spennymoor respectively.

Moore is likely to be on the bench tomorrow but left-back Stuart Giddings is out with a groin injury. It is hoped Richie Byrne will replace him if he recovers from a hamstring strain.

Darlington’s game with Notts County has been rearranged for Tuesday, April 27.
