DARLINGTON’S squad reshaping will continue this week when manager Tommy Wright speaks to those whose future remains uncertain, but there were significant developments at the weekend.

Terry Galbraith and Josh Gillies have agreed one-year deals with the club, following a number of team-mates in recent months in agreeing to extend their stay.

But five players are leaving and the most notable exits are that of long-serving Gary Brown and Leon Scott, both announcing their departure having each signed for the club in 2012.

Also going is Greg Mills, who arrived midway through this season but has agreed to a mutual termination of his contract, and youngsters Lee Hume and Dale Milburn, two players who had been given deals by previous manager Martin Gray but did not make a first-team appearance.

But it’s the exits of Brown and Scott that are of most significance, marking the end of an era given that between them played 408 games and were part of three promotion-winning sides.

They were among the first signings when Martin Gray built a squad in the summer of 2012 and played in the opening match of the Northern League season, a 3-1 win over Bishop Auckland, with Brown starting and Scott coming off the bench.

Their team-mates from that day have all long since departed, but Brown and Scott have gone on to make a major contributions to Quakers’ cause.

This season ended, however, with Brown having lost his place in the centre of defence, while Scott has not started a match since January.

Brown said: “It is with a very heavy heart I have to announce I am moving on to my next challenge.

“The last six seasons at Darlo have been my life, literally, but when your time’s up, your time’s up.

“I've cried a lot of tears but my next club is getting a fully-fuelled Gary Brown.”

Brown, who had a spell with Shildon in 2015, but soon returned made 186 appearances for Darlington, while Scott wore a Quakers shirt 222 times.

Scott said: "I would like to thank Darlington for all of the memories over the years, memories I will never forget.

"I will always be grateful for being part of all the success in my time at the club.

"Thank you to the fans who have been unreal from the start, but mainly thank you to the lads, a bunch I'll never forget.

"It's time for a new chapter for me, I wish Darlington and all of the boys all the best in the future."

Galbraith and Gillies’ new deals come after Joe Wheatley, Stephen Thompson, Josh Heaton and Ben O’Hanlon all extended their stays several week ago.

Wright decided to delay any further new deals, concerned that the team’s disappointing performance at home to Boston United – a 2-1 defeat at the beginning of April –hinted at complacency in the squad.

However, with the season over Galbraith and Gillies have put pen to paper.

Galbraith has played at left-back in most of his 236 games since joining Darlington from Dunston in December 2012, but in the second half of the season formed a centre-back partnership with Heaton.

Season 2018-19 will be Gillies’ third with Quakers, the attack-minded midfielder having joined two years ago from Gateshead. He has scored 19 goals in that time, making 81 appearances.

However, there remains uncertainty over the future of a small number of players as some are under contract but not in Wright’s plans and The Northern Echo understands Quakers will publish a retained list this week.

Meanwhile, on Friday Thompson won two Player of the Year awards. He won the fans’ player of the year, as well as the players’ player of the year award.

Reece Styche was the manager’s player of the year, and the striker also won the goal of the season, his effort away to Alfreton winning the prize.

The Harvey Madden award for services to the club went to director John Tempest. A club statement read: “John has put a huge amount of work into the club over the last year, and has been a great friend and helper to many.”
