DARLINGTON striker Amar Purewal scored a hat-trick today while on duty for the Panjab football team, and his twin brother Arjun was also on target.

They are playing at the CONIFA World Cup – a tournament for unrecognised states and is not recognised by FIFA – with Panjab beating Somaliland 5-0 to finish top of their group.

The victory was Panjab’s second of the week having overcome Sapmi 1-0 on Sunday thanks to a goal by Kidderminster Harriers striker Gurjit Singh, who scored too.

The tournament is contested by members of the Confederation of Independent Football Associations (CONIFA), and is taking place in Georgia’s breakaway republic Abkhazia.

The 12-team competition also includes teams representing: Abkhazia, Chagos Islands, Kurdistan, Northern Cyprus, Padania, Raetia, Székely Land, United Koreans in Japan and Western Armenia.

“Our key motive is to let everyone, everywhere, play football,” says CONIFA general secretary Sascha Duerkop.

Amar made a comeback from a long-term injury in the latter half of the season, spending time on at Harrogate RA before returning to the Darlington squad in the final weeks of the season.

Defender Arjun, with Darlington in the first half of the 2012-13 season, currently plays for Bishop Auckland, while also in the Panjab squad is Rikki Bains, who was with Quakers during Colin Todd’s brief period as manager in 2009.
