DARLINGTON may have this week taken a step closer to promotion, by previous experience tells them not to take anything for granted.

They require seven points to seal first position ahead of Blyth Spartans, and their four remaining fixtures are against teams currently positioned 10th, 17th, 20th and 22nd.

First up is third-bottom Stamford at the Brewery Field on Saturday, however, winger Adam Mitchell warned: “Nothing is guaranteed in this division.

“It’s the same as last season, it was so open, teams at the bottom were beating teams at the top, we lost to teams who were not in the play-offs.

“So we need to stay focused and go and win it now.”

Tuesday’s win over Skelmersdale came three days after the same side pulled off a surprise win at Blyth, but there was little danger of Darlington succumbing to the mid-table opposition.

Quakers were on top throughout, winning 3-0, and Mitchell added: “One we got the first goal and started pressing it turned out to be an easier game than we expected considering their result on Saturday against Blyth.

“They had travelled seven hours on Saturday and then another six up here, whether that took its toll on them I don’t know.

“It could’ve been four or 5-0 by half-time, never mind full-time, their keeper pulled off some good saves.”
