Darlington’s substitutes changed the game as Quakers returned to the FA Trophy trail.
Quakers memorably won the 2011 competition at Wembley, but they will have to play better if they are going to have a good run this season, especially when the National League teams come into the draw.
Quakers were a goal down at one point against a team from a level below them, but goals from Adam Nowakowski, on his home debut, teenager Lewis Walton and second half replacement Nathan Cartman put them through.
The introduction of Cartman and Lee Gaskell on the hour gave Quakers some much-needed impetus to go on and win.
Manager Martin Gray was less than pleased with the display: “I’m not accepting that level of performance for two weeks in a row. We might have had six players missing for various reasons, but I still can’t accept that performance because it wasn’t much better than last week’s against Mickleover.
“There were probably only three or four players who played well enough.
“I thought Adam Nowakowski took his goal really well, and I was pleased that he came through the game without any after effects with his injury. You know what you’re going to get from him.
“I thought it was good for Lewis Walton to score in only his second game, because it was a big occasion for him, but there will be changes for our next game.”
There were some early warning signs, Mossley’s Micky Thomas headed powerfully against the crossbar, and Dave Short turned quickly and forced Darlington keeper Peter Jameson into a low save.
Quakers’ first real chance came on 15 minutes when Rob Youhill crossed from the right, keeper Liam Flynn flapped, and the ball dropped for youngster Walton, who flashed a right foot shot wide.
But Quakers were opened up again on 19 minutes when Tom Pratt had plenty of time to control the ball on the edge of the box, and he hit a right foot shot past Jameson.
Quakers levelled on 28 minutes when a long throw by Lewis Gibbons from the right dropped for Adam Nowakowski, who had the most urgency of any Darlington player – he even challenged his own team mate Terry Galbraith for the ball on one occasion - to slot into the corner past Mossley keeper Liam Flynn.
Nowakowski nearly got a second two minutes later when he managed to get a flick on an inswinging Terry Galbraith free kick, and Flynn fumbled the ball away at the near post.
Quakers went close again on 37 minutes when Walton flighted a cross over to the far post for Graeme Armstrong to head towards goal, but Flynn saved well.
Quakers improved in the second half and took the lead on 62 minutes, when Gaskell and Cartman, on for Armstrong and the quiet debutant Jakub Hymr, combined well for Gaskell to hit a right foot shot that was blocked, but the ball ran for Walton to hammer left footed into the roof of the net, to give him his second goal for the club in two appearances. He scored against New Mills last season.
Walton was subbed a few minutes later, with another teenager, Lee Hume, replacing him.
However, Mossley were still dangerous, and Scott Kay slipped the ball through for Mark Fish, but the alert Jameson saved at his feet.
But there was no escape for Quakers, because on 75 minutes Fish picked the ball up on the left and squared for Sam Robinson to sidestep a defender, and beat Jameson with a right foot shot.
However, just two minutes later Cartman was upended by Flynn as he ran into the box on the left, and Cartman sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot for his ten goal of the season.
Mossley though nearly equalised again when Fish again got away, but Jameson saved at his feet again, and in the last minute John Bennett headed into Jameson’s hands.
Midfielder Phil Turnbull has suffered a broken jaw. Turnbull needed hospital treatment following an incident in his home town of South Shields when he was out with his wife and family last weekend.
A club spokesman said: “The matter is now in the hands of the police. Phil has the full backing of the club.”
