Darlington have completed the signing of a defender from Sunderland on loan.

Right-back Andrew Cartright has joined for a month and is expected to make his Darlington debut in tomorrow’s match at Harrogate RA.

He arrives at a time when Quakers will be without a right-back due to Gary Brown, the team’s first choice in the position this season, moving to the centre of defence to cover for Alan White’s one-match suspension tomorrow.

Winger Adam Mitchell has filled the void for the past two matches, but he begins a two-game ban this weekend. Mitchell, who joined Darlington a year ago from Sunderland, is now on trial with League One club Gillingham.

Although a regular in Sunderland’s Under-21s, Cartright has not made played in a competitive fixture for the Black Cats, but last summer the defender scored twice in a 3-0 win over Hartlepool United during a pre-season friendly.

He joins Darlington 33 years after his father, Peter, did likewise after leaving Newcastle United.

Peter signed for Quakers toward the end of the 1982-83 season and quickly made a name for himself by scoring in a 2-1 win against Hartlepool United at Feethams in only his third game.

He was an almost ever-present the following season, before leaving for Blyth Spartans in the summer of 1984 having made 59 appearances in all competitions and scoring seven goals.
