DID YOU KNOW?

● Alan Pardew started his playing career as a semiprofessional with London sides Whyteleafe and Epsom & Ewell. He combined playing football with part-time jobs as a glazer and taxi driver.

● As an apprentice glazer, Pardew helped fit the glass in the NatWest Tower in the City of London. He briefly gave up his footballing career when he secured a sixmonth contract fitting glass in the Middle East.

● Pardew’s first professional contract with Crystal Palace was worth £400-a-week. He joined for £4,000 and made his Football League debut at the age of 25.

● His greatest moment as a player was scoring the winning goal in Crystal Palace’s epic FA Cup semi-final victory over Liverpool in 1990.

● A fiercely-competitive box-to-box midfielder, he joined Charlton in 1991 and scored 21 goals in two seasons. Four years later he joined Barnet, where he began to combine playing with coaching.

● His first formal coaching job was in charge of the reserves team at Reading, but he was released when the second-string side was scrapped. However, he rejoined the club and, after a brief spell in caretaker charge, took over the Royals in 1999.

● He joined West Ham in 2003 but was forced to oversee the sale of the likes of Frank Lampard, Michael Carrick and Jermain Defoe following the Hammers'

relegation from the top-flight.

● His greatest success as a manager was leading West Ham to the 2006 FA Cup final, where they lost on penalties to Liverpool after a late Steven Gerrard wonder goal.

● He has also managed Charlton and Southampton, where he claimed his only trophy as a manager – last season’s Football League Trophy thanks to a win over Carlisle.
