Turner hopes Pools have turned the corner

WITH a two-week wait for their next fixture, Chris Turner has a few days to discover if his hopes of an upturn in fortunes is to be realised.

Hartlepool United’s late comeback against Leeds at the weekend lifted spirits at Victoria Park.

A point in Pools’ current predicament – two wins in 13 games – is hardly seasonchanging, but Turner hopes the impressive performance and the fact that his side avoided defeat at the death will go a long way in the closing weeks of the campaign.

“I hope it is a turning point for us and it was important to play in front of our crowd like they have away from home.

The last three or four games we have played fantastic, the best for a long time,’’ he said.

“We haven’t been doing that at home, so I was pleased the crowd could see in the secondhalf what we are all about.

“We are not just talking things up, we have been playing that way.

“To get a result against Leeds, I’m sure the players take a confidence boost from it and kick on in the next two games.

“We made a good performance at Charlton, and followed it up with an excellent display at Bristol Rovers, but we got nothing. Then we went to Norwich, excellent performance, got nothing.

“This time we deserved something and got it. There’s been a knock on effect from the game at Charlton, by having Joe Gamble sitting in midfield and making us play.’’ Turner insisted that despite results going against his side, the displays have merited more.

Pools don’t play again until Huddersfield visit Victoria Park on February 20, with Carlisle arriving three days later, before a trip to Millwall on February 27.

“Performances have been good and, even if results aren’t going your way, if you play well it will come,’’ he said.

“There’s an excellent spirit here, the players were so deflated after MK Dons like everyone was. That was a oneoff.

We got players back and the performances have been good.

“Yes they have been disappointed at times, but not despondent.

“On Saturday we looked more of an attacking threat and Ritchie Jones’ pace in the second-half helped.

“We are trying to get pace in the team to cause problems."
