Spennymoor manager Jason Ainsley wants a good FA Trophy run to make up for an early FA Cup exit when they go to Cleethorpes in the third qualifying round today.

Moors went out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle when they lost at home to Gainsborough, and that was a big disappointment for them considering that they got to the first round proper last season.

And that poor showing will be a source of motivation for manager Jason Ainsley this afternoon. “We want a good run in this competition,” he said. “But Cleethorpes is a tough draw, they had a good win in the last round, plus they’ve just had a very good season. They’re a team that’s not used to losing, and they’ll have nothing to lose against us.

“We want to bounce back from last week’s defeat at Leamington. I don’t think I’ve been involved in a game quite like it, because we created plenty of chances, didn’t take any of them and they came back to bite us.

“We’ll be going to Cleethorpes full of confidence, one poor result won’t change the way that we play. We’ve done very well so far this season, so why should we change it?”

Defender Joe Tait is out because of suspension – he picked up his fifth booking of the season at Leamington – so either Chris Mason or James Curtis will take his place.

“Joe’s absence will mean a chance for one of those two, who are both chomping at the bit to get back in. They both know how difficult it is to get back in the team if they lose their shirt through injury or suspension.”

Top scorer Glen Taylor is a big doubt because of a leg injury.

Cleethorpes lost to South Shields in the FA Vase final last season, and were also promoted from the Northern Counties East League to the EvoStik First Division South. They beat Hednesford from the EvoStik Premier in the previous round.
