Spennymoor Town 1 Gainsborough 2

Spennymoor manager Jason Ainsley admitted that he couldn’t see their defeat by Gainsborough coming at half time on Saturday.

Moors played some great football in the first 45 minutes on the back of their 6-0 midweek win at North Ferriby, and when they led 1-0 at half time, it looked as if Moors were on the FA Cup trail again.

But the second half was in complete contrast to the first, and Gainsborough hit back and stunned Moors with a late winner.

“We were excellent in the first 45 minutes, the same as we had been against North Ferriby in midweek, but then we imploded in the second half,” he said.

“I was fuming that we didn’t come out of the dressing room in the second half. I don’t think the players realised the magnitude of what an FA Cup run entails, and what we achieved last season.

“I don’t think any keeper could have stopped their first goal, because it was a wonder strike, while the second was an error by our keeper.

“I really didn’t see it coming in the second half, because in the first half we had been so dominant and playing off the back of a great win, but in the second half the game was completely different and we were second to the ball.

“We don’t have the consistency at the moment – this performance wasn’t the reaction I was looking for after the Ferriby game, especially after the first half. We went out of the Cup with a whimper, I’m afraid.”

Moors slowly got on top at the start of the game, and took the lead after 18 minutes when Rob Ramshaw helped the ball on for Glen Taylor, who fired past the Gainsborough keeper.

Mark Anderson and Joe Tait then had good efforts blocked, and before half time Jamie Chandler ran through but pulled his effort wide, then Ramshaw got through one-on-one, but the keeper saved.

Gainsborough improved in the second half, and levelled after 59 minutes with a terrific drive by Ashley Worsfold that flew into the top corner.

Moors nearly went straight back in front, but David Foley was denied by a great save, but Gainsborough went back on the attack. Nathan Jarman had a shot deflected wide and had a header saved, before Ioan Evans headed the winner with keeper Jordan Porter over- committed.

Moors: Porter, Griffiths, Tait, Mason, Chantler, Ramshaw, Dixon, Anderson (sub Armstrong 76), Chandler, Foley (sub Johnson 76), Taylor.

Subs: Curtis, Lowson, Johnson, Orrell, Henry, Ellison Blyth are also out of the competition, as they were surprisingly beaten 2-1 at home by Shaw Lane from the EvoStik Premier.
