NEWCASTLE UNITED’S return to the Premier League ended in a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham this afternoon when midfielder Jonjo Shelvey certainly didn’t help the team’s cause.
With the game goalless, Shelvey was issued with a straight red card for planting his studs into Dele Alli’s right leg just moments after half-time.
And ten-man Newcastle were unable to keep Tottenham at bay after that and it was Alli who finally found the breakthrough on the hour.
Newcastle worked hard and created one or two chances of their own but a difficult task was always going to be even harder after Shelvey’s moment of madness.
And, ten minutes after Alli’s opener, Tottenham grabbed the second when Ben Davies arrived in the box to finish off a decent move.
