Goals:

1-0: Tarpey (34, long ball flicked on by Marks and striker finished one on one)

2-0: Tarpey (58, square pass by Laing intercepted by the striker who raced away to finish)

2-1: Amond pen (86, confidently netted after Magnay was felled)

Bookings: Newton (foul 73), Comley (foul 86)

Referee: Neil Hair (Peterborough): No major issues to deal with in the middle 7

Attendance: 1,491

Entertainment: 1/5

MAIDENHEAD UNITED (4-4-2): Pentney 6; Clerima 6, Massey 7, Goodman 6, Kilman 6; Pritchard 7 (Mulley 70, 5), Odametey 7, Upward 6 (Inman 90), Comley 7; Tarpey 8, Marks 7 (Clifton 59, 5). Subs (not used): Hyde, Barratt.

HARTLEPOOL UNITED (3-5-2)

7 Loach: Pools would have lost by more if it wasn’t for their keeper making a good saves – three times denying double scored Tarpey;

4 Laing: His pass to gift Maidenhead a second goal was awful. Held his hands up afterwards and apologised to supporters, but there was no need to pass where he did

6 Magnay: Started in the middle of a back three and moved to right-back. Earned Pools a penalty as he pushed forward late on

5 Harrison: Never looked happy or settled with the ball at his feet playing from the back. Had to be switched on and strong throughout against a lively strike partnership;

5 Donnelly: Pushed forward at right wing-back and played high up the pitch in the opening 45 minutes. Had one positive burst into the area, but blasted high over

4 Hawkins: He’s not a young kid starting out in the game anymore – needs to show a lot more than he has so far in three games this season. Freedom to roam, but too slack on the ball

6 Newton: Always busy and looking for the ball. His best role may be playing further forward rather than being the deep-lying midfielder

4 Donaldson: Should be relatively free to attack and be positive in a three-man midfield; he wasn’t and offered little as the game passed him by

7 Adams: Pools’ best outfield player in the first-half as he pressed forward and was never afraid to drive into the opposition area;

6 Cassidy: His partnership with Amond is a work in progress and there’s potential there even if the pair are on slightly different wavelengths at times

6 Amond: Confident penalty to get off the mark. Ran and chased all game and took a right clattering late on as Pools chased an equaliser.

Subs:

Woods (for Hawkins 46): Tried to prompt Pools in midfield with his passing 6

Deverdics (for Donaldson 67): Time for a run in the side now. Can open up defences in the manner others in the squad can’t 6

Rodney (for Donnelly 67): Introduced but played out wide on the right and never got involved 5

Subs (not used): Featherstone, Munns.
