SIMON GRAYSON has made four changes to the Sunderland team for tonight's Carabao Cup tie at Bury.

The Black Cats boss, whose side drew with Derby in the Championship on Friday, has resisted the temptation to make wholesale changes in the hope it helps to boost confidence, provided they can come away with a positive result at Gigg Lane.

Irish defender John O'Shea is recalled to the heart of the defence at the expense of Lamine Kone, who continues to attract interest from the Premier League.

In midfield Darron Gibson slots in as a replacement for the rested Lee Cattermole. It is the first time Gibson has played since his outburst to fans at a County Durham hotel.

Full-back Adam Matthews is preferred ahead of Donald Love and Billy Jones at right-back and the other change sees Wahbi Khazri start ahead of former Shakers front-man James Vaughan.

Just weeks ago Vaughan lined up for Lee Clark's Bury against Sunderland in a pre-season friendly before making a £500,000 switch to the Stadium of Light.

BURY (5-3-2): Murphy; Leigh, Whitmore, Aldred, Thompson, Jones; Reilly, Dawson, Dai; Bunn, Ajose. Subs: Tutte, Beckford, Ismail, Humphrey, Cameron, Fasan, Lowe.

SUNDERLAND (4-4-2): Steele; Matthews, Browning, O’Shea, Galloway; Honeyman, Ndong, Gibson, McGeady; Khazri; Grabban. Subs: Ruiter (gk), Vaughan, Kone, Love, Gooch, Asoro, Rodwell.
