GARRY MONK is set to follow up new additions to Middlesbrough’s backroom team by keeping fans’ favourite Dimi Konstantopoulos at the Riverside Stadium.

The Middlesbrough manager – who has been told there is now interest in Danish forward Viktor Fischer from Mainz - has confirmed James Beattie and David Adams will be first team coaches under his watch, while Daryl Flahavan will become goalkeeper coach.

Flahavan will be working with Konstantopoulos, with the towering Greek shot-stopper set to sign a one-year extension to his deal.

He has had his future put on hold during the last few weeks while Boro chairman Steve Gibson searched for a new boss.

But Monk, whose side learned yesterday their first Championship fixture will be at Wolves on August 5, is happy to keep Konstantopoulos and everything is in place for him to extend his Middlesbrough stay by a further season.

The pair were team-mates for a few months at Swansea when he spent time on loan there from Coventry in 2008-09 and the former Hartlepool goalkeeper will be desperate to hold down the No 1 shirt again.

Konstantopoulos, who turns 39 in November, is still well liked by the players at Middlesbrough and is appreciated by supporters, who sang for him to play in the final Premier League game at Liverpool of last season.

He was left frustrated because his first year in the top tier of English football came to an end without him making an appearance following the arrivals of Victor Valdes and Brad Guzan.

Both of those have since moved on following relegation and, even though Monk could be looking at other options to compete for the role, Konstantopoulos will be looking to win his place back.

He was a crucial factor in Middlesbrough’s promotion season as well as the charge to the play-off final 12 months earlier. He was set to be free agent at the end of his contract this month, with interest from other Championship clubs.

Monk is looking to make additions to his Middlesbrough squad and is going to be backed by Gibson on the transfer front.

Mainz have contacted Middlesbrough to discuss a possible deal for Fischer, who has also attracted interest from Celtic just 12 months after moving from Ajax in a £3.8m deal.

Monk has already tinkered with his backroom team. He confirmed yesterday that former Blackburn and Southampton striker Beattie, a former Boro target during his playing days, has followed him from Elland Road and has been named first team coach along with ex-Swansea coach Adams.

Goalkeeper coach Flahavan, who was with Monk at Leeds, will replace Leo Percovich and there are two further additions with Sean Rush joining the club as head of physical performance and Ryan Needs coming in as head of performance analysis.

The futures of Steve Agnew, who still has the title of assistant manager while Monk hasn’t appointed a No 2, and Jonathan Woodgate remain unclear. Paul Jenkins is expected to drop back down to the under-23s.

Monk said: “It’s important as a manager that you build staff around you to work with you to deliver what is needed to be delivered.

“We have great experience together as a group – we’ve worked together for a good period – and they have a good understanding of what I expect and how we work together.

“As you go through your career, you’re consistently looking to refine and improve things and we’re all on that journey together.

“The guys have the skill sets that we need to be able to cover all bases and there’s also the importance of being able to rely on them with the responsibilities they will have.”
