YORK CITY made it a North-East double when they the FA Buildbase Trophy for the second time in six years with victory over Macclesfield Town at Wembley.

After South Shields had won the FA Vase at the national stadium, York took centre stage and the silverware.

Their hero was 35-year-old striker Jon Parkin, who scored one and would have claimed the winner five minutes from the end if it wasn’t for team mate Aidan Connolly making sure.

York got to a great start when they took the lead on eight minutes, when Parkin, playing against his old club, firmly headed a left wing free kick by Danny Holmes past former Hartlepool keeper Scott Flinders.

But Macclesfield quickly levelled when Rhys Browne fired through the legs of York keeper Kyle Letheren from the edge of the box after the York defence failed to properly clear a free kick from the left.

The game swung from end to end with neither defence looking solid, and so it was no surprise when another goal came along on 22 minutes when Sean Newton broke down the left and crossed to the far post where Vadaine Oliver slid the ball past Flinders.

After Browne spoiled a great run by firing over the top when he should have passed, Macclesfield levelled in first half stoppage time when Ollie Norburn played a one-two in midfield and blasted a 25 yarder past Letheren, who was left grasping thin air.

In the second half, Letheren made three good saves to keep his team in the game, but it was Parkin who created the winner, when he chested down a deep crossfield pass, burst past a defender and beat Flinders with the help of a deflection, and sub Connolly tapped in from almost on the line to claim the goal for York, who will be playing alongside Darlington and Spennymoor in the Vanarama National League North next season.
