DARLINGTON’S top scorer Mark Beck achieved a memorable double when he collected two player of the year awards at the weekend in recognition of a fine first season in Quakers colours.

He found the net 18 times and supplied numerous assists, while playing in almost every minute of the campaign.

The only league match he did not start was on the opening day of the season – away to Altrincham – when he was not eligible, while he was substituted only once (at Bradford PA).

Beck’s contribution was recognised on Saturday evening at the Mercure Darlington King’s Hotel when he was named as both the fans’ and players’ Player of the Year, the awards coming two days after signing a new two-year contract.

The new deal came soon after Phil Turnbull – last season’s player of the year – and Nathan Cartman signed new deals

Cartman was given the Goal of the Season accolade, as voted for online by supporters.

His close-range effort finished off a fine team goal at home to Tamworth in April, one that involved Dave Syers, David Ferguson, Beck and numerous passes before Cartman applied the finish.

Ferguson’s thunderbolt at home to FC United of Manchester last month was second in the vote.

Teenager Harvey Saunders has also committed himself to the club.

The striker, from Staindrop, has penned a two-year deal. He made his mark this season, making 11 appearances and scoring two crucial goals: a last-gasp equaliser at Worcester and the winner at home to Bradford PA.

He was named as Darlington’s Most Improved Player on Saturday evening, and also among the winners was Steve Charlton, who is stepping down as Quakers’ club doctor and received an award in recognition of 31 years’ service.

Previously a season-ticket holder, he has since attended three decades of matches in an official capacity, starting during Cyril Knowles tenure as manager and regularly being required for his expertise.

Supporters Glen and Mary Bowes, volunteers for many years, were popular winners of the Harvey Madden award, for their hard work towards organising supporters buses for away games, help at Quaker Retail and selling the highly popular 50-50 tickets at matches.
