YORK CITY hope to end what has been a dreadful season on a high tomorrow when they head to Wembley in the FA Trophy final against Macclesfield Town.

The Minstermen, who won the competition in 2012, were relegated for the second year running and will start next season in the National League North, the same division as Darlington, Spennymoor Town and Blyth Spartans.

Boss Gary Mills believes tomorrow offers an opportunity to draw a line under this season’s failings, a chance to move on.

“Out of what has happened there are a lot of positives,” Mills told BBC Radio York.

“Last season has gone for me, this is next season.

“I’ve got Jon Parkin signed up for next season and 90 per cent of the players have told me they want to play for me next season and I think that is fantastic.

“I want us to look at this game like the Community Shield and if we can win it it sets us up for the season.”

Macclesfield finished ninth, 14 points outside the play-offs, whereas York were relegated on the final day against Forest Green on April 29.

York’s squad was then given a ten-day break, and defender Dan Parslow believes it was needed.

“We were all in a state of shock after the Forest Green game coming to terms with what had actually happened to this football club, so it was a chance to go away and reflect,” he said.

“Then, when we came back, the message from the gaffer was there’s no point moping or sulking, because what is done is done. We can’t change that now, so let’s go and win a cup final.”

York lost the Trophy final in 2009 to Stevenage, but won it three years later against Newport County, the same season they won promotion via the play-offs into League Two.

Simon Lappin has lost his race to be fit as he has not recovered from a ruptured Achilles suffered in February. Lanre Oyebanjo and Clovis Kamdjo are also unavailable, but defender Matty Fry returns after recovering from medial knee ligament damage.

The game is the second of a two matches under the arch tomorrow (4.15), as South Shields take on Cleethorpes Town in an earlier kick-off (12.15).
