HARTLEPOOL United have announced the passing of former goalkeeper Norman Oakley.

He died on Tuesday, aged 77.

Oakley was born in Stockton and played for Pools between 1958 and 1964 after joining from Doncaster Rovers.

He made 193 appearances for the club.

Only Scott Flinders has made more league appearances in front of the posts.

Oakley moved to Swindon Town in 1964 and also played for Grimsby Town and Boston.

He returned to the North-East after retiring from the game.

"The thoughts and condolences of everyone at Hartlepool United are with Norman’s family and friends at this sad time," said a club spokesman.
