JERMAIN DEFOE'S penalty was not enough for Sunderland as Southampton hit back to claim a point on the south coast.
David Moyes, the Black Cats boss, looked on course for his first Premier League win since taking over but the Saints hit back to leave both clubs in search of their first league wins of the season.
Defoe opened the scoring when he smashed in a penalty beyond Fraser Forster after being brought down by Jose Fonte with ten minutes left.
But Southampton hit back and were denied an equaliser when Jordan Pickford denied efforts from Charlie Austin, Shane Long and Nathan Redmond strikes.
But Pickford, the young keeper, was at fault for the leveller when he allowed Jay Rodriguez's long-range shot squirm under his body with five minutes to go.
