JAVIER MANQUILLO is determined to prove himself in the Premier League with Sunderland after completing a season-long loan from Atletico Madrid.

Manquillo’s transfer was confirmed this morning, with the Black Cats having successfully pushed for the inclusion of a clause that could see them sign the 22-year-old full-back on a four-year permanent deal next summer.

Manquillo spent the majority of the 2014-15 season on loan at Liverpool, making ten league appearances for the Anfield club before his spell in England was cut short.

He played with French side Marseille last season, making 31 outings in Ligue 1, but was always keen to return to England, where he clearly feels he has some unfinished business to complete.

“I am very happy to come back to the Premier League,” said Manquillo, who watched Sunderland’s EFL Cup win over Shrewsbury from the Stadium of Light stands. “I’m really pleased to sign for Sunderland because they have tried really hard to get me here and since the very first minute they have been really welcoming.

“I come to Sunderland with a lot of experience. I am very happy to be here, and I can assure every single Sunderland fan that I will be giving my best at every training day and match. I want to give everything inside of me for this club.”

As a right-back, Manquillo will compete with Donald Love and Billy Jones for a place in Sunderland’s first team, and could even find himself thrust straight into the starting line-up for Saturday’s game at Southampton.

“Since the very first minute I arrived at the club, I have met some great people and they are looking forward to big things,” he added, in an interview with Sunderland's official website.

“This club is very big, and I cannot expect any better, so I think the club is going to have a great future. Everything I have seen since I came is a club that is looking forward to doing very good things.”

Sunderland remain in talks with Yann M’Vila and his representatives about a potential move from Rubin Kazan, but discussions remain difficult to resolve.

They are also pursuing Barnsley defender Alfie Mawson and Nottingham Forest midfielder Oliver Burke as David Moyes looks to add to the six signing he has made since succeeding Sam Allardyce.
