St James’ Park played host to Jamie Vardy equalling Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s record of scoring in ten consecutive Premier League games and BetVictor make Vardy 2/1 to break the Dutchman’s record at Old Trafford at the weekend.

Leicester’s 3-0 defeat of the Magpies moved them top of the Premier League table but it was a different story for Newcastle with BetVictor cutting them to 13/8 (from 9/4) to be relegated.

Premier League Relegation prices from BetVictor

Sunderland 1/5; Aston Villa 1/3; Bournemouth 8/11; Newcastle 13/8 (from 9/4); Norwich 15/8; 7/1 Bar.

The only solace Magpies fans can take from the market is the fact that Sunderland have been well-supported for the drop and are the favourites for both the drop and the wooden spoon; 1/5 and even money respectively.

Sunderland travel to Selhurst Park this evening but confidence behind them is slim with Alan Pardew’s side the 11/20 favourites, the visitors 6/1 and the draw 16/5. Should Sam Allardyce’s side prevail it will be due to a much-improved rearguard display and rather than backing the Black Cats at 6/1 they warrant supporting at 11/1 to win the game to nil and 18/1 to succeed by the solitary goal.

Allardyce alluded to the defence as being pivotal to achieving safety this term and a lot will depend on the performance of Costel Pantillimon between the posts. BetVictor are 16/1 that any goalkeeper is named the man of the match but there’s plenty of value elsewhere and Black Cats pair of Lee Cattermole and Sebastian Larsson could prove match winners and look overpriced at 20/1 to be awarded the personal honours in South London.
