DUNCAN WATMORE has signed a new four-year deal that commits his long-term future to Sunderland.

Watmore's new deal takes him to the summer of 2020, and ensures that the Black Cats will be able to hold on to the most promising player to have progressed through their academy system for a number of years.

Having joined Sunderland from non-league Altrincham in the summer of 2013, Watmore broke into the first-team ranks at the start of this season, having previously impressed with the Under-21 team.

The 21-year-old was crowned Barclays Under-21 Premier League Player of the Season last term, and made his England Under-21 debut against a United States side in September.

Black Cats boss Sam Allardyce said: "Duncan is an exciting prospect and the kind of talent that you want to see coming through at your club.

"He is a bright young man, he has a sensible head on his shoulders and if he continues to make the kind of progress we have seen this season, I am sure that he has a great future ahead of him."

Watmore added: "I'm delighted to sign my new deal and commit my future to Sunderland.

"I've had a great few years here developing my game and now I hope to push on further, with the help of the staff, my team-mates and the supporters, who have all been fantastic with me."
