STEVE McCLAREN does not expect anyone to leave Newcastle United before the transfer window closes, and has insisted the club does not have to sell despite spending almost £50m on new additions this summer.

The Magpies are unlikely to make any more signings before Tuesday’s transfer deadline, so attention has switched to possible outgoings in the final four days of the window.

Moussa Sissoko and Cheick Tiote have been the subject of sustained interest from both within the Premier League and overseas in the past, while Papiss Cisse’s future continues to be the subject of considerable conjecture after he came close to leaving Tyneside in January.

Having loosened the purse strings to sign Georginio Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel Mbemba and Florian Thauvin, Mike Ashley could opt to recoup some of his expenditure by selling one of the Magpies’ leading assets.

However, despite this summer’s net spend making Newcastle one of the Premier League’s three biggest investors, McClaren insists there is no desire to sell off anyone ahead of the transfer deadline.

“I hope we don’t lose anyone, and we have no intention of doing that,” said the Magpies head coach. “There’s a great determination from the club, to reiterate from two weeks ago, that we don’t need to sell.

“We don’t have to sell, we don’t want to sell, and we don’t want to lose any of our best players.

“We’ve wanted to bring players in, and we have done that with Thauvin. At this present moment, we are happy.”

McClaren is currently preparing for tomorrow’s lunch-time kick-off with Arsenal, and will make a late decision on whether or not to include Moussa Sissoko in the squad.

Sissoko damaged his groin in the 2-0 defeat at Swansea, and was not involved in either last weekend’s goalless draw at Manchester United or the midweek Capital One Cup win over Northampton.

He returned to training yesterday though, and will be given every opportunity to claim a place in the starting line-up against the Gunners.

“We thought he would have no chance to be honest, but he has healed well,” said McClaren. “Is he ready? We'll decide that tomorrow.

“He has trained a couple of days with the team, so we will just have to weigh up the fitness side of it. Everyone else is okay.”
