Referee:  Pavel Kralovec (Czech Republic) – Didn’t have a controversial decision to make all night, and controlled things with calm assurance 7

Entertainment: ****

ENGLAND (4-3-3):

6 Hart: Can rarely have had a quieter night in an international jersey – didn’t have to make a single save of note

6 Clyne: Was never tested defensively, but might have expected to make more of an impression on the overlap

7 Cahill: Lithuania’s decision to play a one-man attack meant he was never extended and he marshalled the rest of the defence well

7 Jones: Preferred to an out-of-sorts Jagielka and made one important intervention to deny Matulevicius in the first half

8 Baines: Hasn’t been at his best with Everton, but saw plenty of the ball in the Lithuanian half and produced some telling deliveries

7 Henderson: Displayed an abundance of energy in midfield and while his shooting wasn’t the best, he produced a fine cross for Welbeck’s goal

7 Carrick: Generally looks neat and tidy when he has plenty of time in which to play, and he kept England on the front foot effectively

7 Delph: Continues to look at home on the international stage, with an early flicked pass to release Rooney especially impressive

8 Sterling: Caused all sorts of problems after switching to the left-hand side, and deservedly claimed his first England goal in the second half

8 Rooney: Another superb display from the skipper, who scored and hit the woodwork twice inside the opening 20 minutes

9 WELBECK: Ripped the Lithuanian defence apart in the first half, setting up Rooney’s opener and scoring himself on the stroke of half-time

Man Of The Match: DANNY WELBECK – The Arsenal striker might well have been the fall guy for Harry Kane’s debut, but he more than justified his starting spot with an excellent attacking display full of energy and invention.
