BRADLEY FEWSTER’S back-heel flick took Middlesbrough’s development side into the last 16 of the Under-21 Premier League Cup as they beat Hull City 1-0 at the Riverside.

Fewster’s first-half strike settled a tight encounter as a relatively inexperienced Boro side saw off a Hull line-up boasting Premier League regulars Liam Rosenior, Alex Pearce and Yannick Sagbo.

Boro’s second string was deprived of the services of Bryn Morris and Emmanuel Ledesma, who left on loan last week, but the hosts started brightly and Callum Cooke saw a 15th-minute shot saved.

Fewster broke the deadlock in spectacular fashion five minutes  later, flicking the ball home via a back-heel from close to the penalty spot after Ryan Brobbel crossed from the left.

Jonny Burn produced a goalline clearance to thwart Johan Ter Horst shortly before the interval, with Fewster and Brobbel both wasting decent chances to add to Boro’s lead in the second half.

Middlesbrough: Ripley, Bennett, Atkinson, Burn, Husband, Kitching (Maloney 76), Tinkler, Brobbel (McCarthy 83), Cooke, Jones, Fewster.
