Full-time: AFC Telford 3 Spennymoor Town 0

TELFORD ended Moors’ dreams of a first round place in the FA Cup when midfielder Mike Grogan scored twice in a 3-0 win at the Bucks Head.

It was cruel on Moors, who were within seconds of victory last Saturday until Grogan equalised deep into stoppage time.

Moors held their own until half time. Keeper Adam McHugh dealt with an inswinging corner, while Michael Roberts, who replaced Gavin Cogdon in the starting line up, put an effort at the other end over the bar.

After the Moors defence blocked a free kick by Sean Clancy, Roberts, whose pace was causing Telford some early problems, put a half chance wide.

McHugh pulled off his first real save when he tipped an effort by Ryan Higgins over the bar, then minutes later he blocked a low shot by Adam Farrell. Grogan also found the side netting as the pressure started to build.

McHugh pulled off another save from Grogan after the Telford midfielder got on the end of a left wing cross, but Moors, with their 147 fans out of a crowd of 934 roaring them on, nearly took the lead on 25 minutes when Roberts was left unmarked a few yards out, but Telford keeper Jonathan Hedge managed to knock the ball over the bar.

Telford went even closer on the half hour, when Farrell prodded the ball towards goal in a scramble, but McHugh managed to clear off the line.

Moors manager Jason Ainsley was then forced into one change, taking off Kallum Griffiths because of injury and replacing him with Dan Groves.

In the second half, Telford took more risks, and they nearly led with Sean Cooke’s shot which went just wide of the post.

After Liam Henderson just cleared the bar with a right foot shot, the Moors defence finally cracked on 56 minutes, when Higgins crossed from the right for danger man Grogan to head past McHugh.

Moors’ response was to withdraw Anthony Peacock and send on Gavin Cogdon, and the tricky striker nearly scored the equaliser with a darting run, but fired just wide, and they went close a few minutes later when Joe Tait hit the bar with a free kick.

Cogdon had another effort as Moors piled forward, but Grogan nearly made them pay when he hit the post at the other end.

But the midfielder made no mistake on 80 minutes, when he beat McHugh with a header from a Clancy free kick, to give the Conference side some breathing space.

It was soon 3-0, when Farrell broke away, and rounded McHugh to put Telford into the next round.
