NEIL Austin revealed his frustration after losing to Luton Town on Saturday.

The Hartlepool United defender, again playing at centre-half, was on the scoresheet with an injury-time penalty, but it counted for little as Pools went down 2-1.

Pools were unable to map a way through the visiting defenders and Austin admitted: “Luton were well organised, nice and strong at the back and we couldn’t break them down.

“When we were trying to counter attack them they were still leaving forward players up so we had to organise and deal with that.

“They scored with their first shot and that sums us up at the moment, we had tested their keeper a few times but then go up the other end and score.

“It was 91 and a half minutes when I scored and you always think it is going to be too late then and so it proved.

“We were positive going forward but couldn’t break them down.’’

Austin has two goals for the season now, but was disappointed to concede a free-kick from which Luton scored their second goal.

He said: “For the free-kick they scored from their lad has pinned me and we are both going backwards and he has dragged me with him.

“That was my argument to the referee but we still had to defend the free-kick better.

“The referee knows what I thought of his performance all match but we won’t go there.

“The first penalty we should have had (on Wyke) was stonewall but the second one I probably wouldn’t have given.

“I thought it was a good tackle from where I was but I suppose you can’t tackle with two-feet anymore.”

Pools are at Accrington tomorrow evening, needing a positive return after another home defeat and Austin said: “Accrington on Tuesday, but we will go there put in 100 per cent and give it our all.

“It was a battle last year, they have had a new manager come in and picked up.

“The spirit around the team is brilliant and the banter is flying here. Hopefully we can get a better result on Tuesday.’’
