A LATE strike from Luke Moore condemned Newcastle to defeat at Swansea, despite an impressive second half display from Alan Pardew’s side.

Moore scored in the 86th minute to give the hosts three points after the Magpies had gone close on a number of occasions after the break.

Pardew made one change from the side that beat Southampton at St James’ Park last week with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa coming in for the injured Fabricio Coloccini.

There was also no Hatem Ben Arfa, who continues to work his way back to full fitness after a hamstring injury.

The Magpies might have comes to the Liberty Stadium thinking their hosts would have one eye off the ball after last weekend’s Capital One Cup final win at Wembley, but Michael Laudrup’s men picked up where they left off in London and quickly took control.

Pablo Hernandez left Mathieu Debuchy for dead on the right and then skipped past Yohan Cabaye before sending his cross into the middle. Newcastle cleared initially, but the ball fell to Wayne Routledge and the former Magpie sent a cross towards Michu, who could only head over.

Swansea’s slick passing was undoing the Magpies far too easily and after Michu knocked down Jonathan de Guzman’s cross, but Ashley William’s effort was cleared off the line by Steven Taylor.

Rob Elliot was called into action moments later from a stinging de Guzman effort, but the keeper parried and Taylor had to be alert again to clear the ball.

The closest Newcastle went in the first half came through Yohan Cabaye, but his free-kick was comfortably collected by Michel Vorm in the Swans goal.

Cabaye and Cheik Tiote picked up yellow cards for two clumsy challenges, while Papiss Cisse was lucky not to join them when he barged down Williams on the near touchline.

Despite Swansea’s control, Pardew’s side showed great resilience to go in level at the break, but moments after the restart Newcastle had Taylor to thank when he cleared Routledge’s volley off the line.

It had been a frustrating first 45 for Newcastle, particularly going forward, but they began to push forward and put some decent moves together.

Cisse almost followed up last week’s stunning strike with another stinging shot, but this time he could only direct his shot over the bar after Moussa Sissoko’s flick on.

Minutes later the Magpies had another chance and after a quick free-kick Sissoko pulled the ball back to Yoan Gouffran on the edge of the area, but his shot also went over the bar.

Newcaslte’s pressing made it difficult for Swansea string a passage of play together and as time went on the Magpies got a foothold on the game.

Some neat passing play saw Santon feed Cabaye 25 yards out but his rasping shot was tipped onto the bar by Vorm.

Sissoko went close himself from long range but Vorm did well to turn the ball round the post, before Debuchy flashed one wide from the resulting corner.

The hosts still looked dangerous on the break, though and Elliot had to be alert when Ki Sung-Yueng broke into the box and fired a shot towards goal.

The Magpies broke up the other end with Sissoko going close from long range, but with 86 minutes on the clock the deadlock was finally broken and after a resilient display, Newcastle went behind.

The Magpies defence failed to deal with a cross from the left and after a couple of deflections off Taylor and Cabaye, substitute Luke Moore finished from close range.
