An unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 85 between Kent pair Matt Coles and Mark Davies has spoilt some good work from Yorkshire's bowlers early on day two at Headingley.
Ajmal Shahzad and Adil Rashid shared three wickets to reduce the visitors from 358-5 to 374-8 under gloomy skies.
But Coles, who has hit Shahzad and Joe Root for two huge leg-side sixes, has been the aggressor in taking the score beyond 450.
Coles brought up his half-century off 47 balls, including four fours and two sixes, in the over before lunch, which Kent reached at 459-8 from 126 overs.
Both sides missed out on full bonus points, with Yorkshire claiming two and Kent four.
Earlier, Darren Stevens chipped Shahzad to Joe Sayers at mid-on before Geraint Jones' off-stump was uprooted by a peach of a delivery from the same bowler. Night-watchman Adam Riley was bowled by Rashid.
Coles will resume this afternoon on 52 and Davies on 35.
