Adam Lyth is ready to regain his place in Yorkshire's LV County Championship team this summer.

The attacking opener is hoping a three-month spell playing grade cricket in Australia will give him the impetus to display some of the stunning form he showed in the Championship during 2010.

Whitby-born Lyth became the first man in the country to pass 1,000 Championship runs, going on to score 1,509. His form even led to calls for his inclusion in England's Ashes squad that winter.

But then, last summer, he only scored 553 runs from 11 matches and was dropped by Yorkshire.

The 24-year-old played for Scarborough in Perth's A grade competition before Christmas after a recommendation from a former professional at Scarborough in North Yorkshire, where Lyth also plays his cricket.

"I got over 500 runs in six two-day games while I was there," he said.

"I was the leading run-scorer in the competition when I left, which was pleasing. I played well in most games.

"I went away, worked on a few things in order to get all the positives back, which I needed.

"It didn't go as well as I'd have liked with Yorkshire last season, but I've put that to the back of my mind now. I can't wait to get out to Barbados and score some runs and hopefully start the season in the first team."

Yorkshire travel to Barbados for their two-week pre-season tour on Monday, and Lyth will look to impress skipper Andrew Gale and first-team coach Jason Gillespie.

With competition fierce for a place in the opener against Kent on April 5, it is a big fortnight for Lyth.

"I'm trying not to put too much pressure on myself, but I need to get some runs out there to get back in the team," he added.

"Competition for places is what we need. I just hope I'm one of those on the team sheet for the Kent game."

At the height of his powers, Lyth passed 50 11 times in the first 18 Championship innings of 2010, including three hundreds.

He was discussed as an England back-up opener to Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss, but had to settle for a place in the Lions squad.

A summer without a century last term has pushed him way down the pecking order.

He added: "I was quite close to the England squad, but things didn't go to plan last year. I don't want to think about that now, though. I just want to concentrate on having another good season for Yorkshire."

Yorkshire open their tour in Barbados with a two-day intra squad match, starting next Thursday. Their first match against county opposition is a 40-over clash with Nottinghamshire on March 19.

They also take part in a Twenty20 competition before a two-day match against Hampshire.

All-rounder Rich Pyrah could miss part or all of the tour due to the impending arrival of twins.
