YORKSHIRE are targeting an overseas batsman for 2017.

New first-team coach Andrew Gale and director of cricket Martyn Moxon have already held discussions regarding recruitment, with the task not proving to be a straightforward one.

During the most recent season, there was talk that Yorkshire were trying to sign a domestic batsman, with Durham pair Scott Borthwick and Keaton Jennings high on their wanted list.

But Borthwick opted for a move to Surrey and Jennings has penned a long-term contract extension to remain at Emirates Riverside.

Since all that happened, Gale has retired from playing to take up his new position at Headingley.

"It leaves us a little bit short, and it's something we're looking into at the minute," he said.

"It's not the right time of year to be going out signing English players because most of them are taken already.

"A new signing is likely to come from the overseas market, and we're working on that at the minute."

Yorkshire had a trio of overseas batsmen last season in Kane Williamson, Travis Head and Jake Lehmann, who would all be popular choices.

Gale, however, admitted it is not quite that simple.

"Going through a few things last week with Martyn, it's very difficult matching timescales up to cricket you want someone to play," he added.

"It's going to be difficult, but hopefully we can get somebody."
