Jason Gillespie praised the impact of Mark Wood after the Durham seamer spectacularly sunk Yorkshire’s treble ambitions.

Wood took four wickets in a hostile four-over spell in the semi-final at Edgbaston as Durham defended their competitive 156-6.

The England quick took two wickets in an over twice at key periods, with his pace wreaking havoc amongst a team littered with England stars.

He gave Joe Root a working over at the start of the fourth over, contributing to his dismissal to Chris Rushworth in the next.

Wood bowled Jonny Bairstow, Liam Plunkett and Tim Bresnan and had Gary Ballance superbly caught at short fine-leg by Paul Collingwood.

Yorkshire were favourites to beat their rivals, but suffered an off day and must now concentrate on chasing silverware in the Specsavers County Championship and Royal London one-day Cup.

“Wood bowled beautifully, no doubt about that,” said White Rose coach Gillespie.

“Durham brought him back on to take a wicket because we were going along quite nicely. We probably didn’t recover from that.

“We got beaten by a better team on the day.

“You have to respect the fact when the opposition, whether it be as an individual or as a team, outplays you. And Woody’s spell was fantastic.

“Any cricket fan can appreciate that. Any watcher can see that he was used very well by the captain. He was brought on to take wickets and put pressure back on us.”

Yorkshire’s batting was below par in the face of a total that should not have been beyond them, despite the heroics of Wood and Rushworth, who struck three times in a miserly spell.

“It was a fantastic game of cricket, no doubt,” said Gillespie. “I thought we were pretty decent in the field. It was a bit wet, but I thought the lads stuck to their task, and I’m really proud of them for that.

“We finished off strong with the ball. I thought Tim Bresnan bowled fantastically well at the end there. But, yes, disappointed to lose.”

Yorkshire may be without all-rounder David Willey for the rest of the campaign with an injured left hand. Willey was struck in his followthrough by a fearsome drive from Mark Stoneman in the third over of the match, although he completed his four-over spell with the ball and later opened the batting.

He was scanned yesterday and will have a follow-up scan today to determine the extent of the damage.

He has been ruled out of England’s one-day series against Pakistan, which starts on Wednesday, with Nottinghamshire’s Jake Ball called up as his replacement.

Ball will miss tomorrow’s Championship match against Yorkshire at Scarborough.
