Yorkshire are on the lookout for a new overseas batsman after Travis Head’s late call-up to Australia duty.

Head has left Headingley to link up with his national squad in Colombo ahead of a one-day series against Sri Lanka on August 21.

The powerful left-hander will be unavailable for the rest of the county season, starting with Thursday’s NatWest T20 Blast quarter-final against Glamorgan at Cardiff.

ECB regulations mean that Yorkshire are now only able to sign a replacement overseas for their final six Specsavers County Championship matches, leaving them without one for the knockout stages of the Blast and the Royal London one-day Cup.

“They can’t play in the quarter-finals or beyond unless they have played in the qualifying games,” explained Yorkshire’s director of professional cricket Martyn Moxon.

Yorkshire were in a similar situation last year when Aaron Finch returned to the county following injury.

He was with the squad for their RL50 quarter-final against Essex, but ineligible having not played a group game.

The likes of Ryan Gibson and Matthew Waite could now come into consideration for their first Blast appearance of the season.

Yorkshire would also have to do without Adil Rashid against Glamorgan and Lancashire in the Championship on Saturday should he be picked for England’s fourth Test against Pakistan at the Oval on Thursday.

Head’s absence is a significant blow given his big impact in the short period he was available to the county.

The 22-year-old hit 113 runs in four T20 innings with scores of 40, 34, 22 and 17. He also hit 175, 49 and 53 in four one-day innings, the other being a duck.

His 175 against Leicestershire at Grace Road was the county’s second highest ever List A score.

He also hit 54 in the first innings of Yorkshire’s Championship win over Warwickshire at the weekend, his only four-day appearance.

The South Australia captain has been called upon immediately in order to train with Australia’s Test squad in Colombo ahead of Saturday’s third and final match of that particular series.

Moxon said: “We would like to thank Travis for his efforts while with the club, albeit for a much shorter period than we’d have liked.

“Travis is undoubtedly a real talent and has much to offer the game going forward. On behalf of the club, I would like to wish him well.

“Although the timing is not ideal, it now affords an opportunity to another member of the playing group.

“We have got an opportunity to be at T20 Finals Day, so Glamorgan is a big game in the context of our season. We’re in the shake-up for three cups, so let’s hope we can win that one and be a step closer.”

Yorkshire’s batting stocks for the limited overs run-in are at least set to be boosted beyond Thursday with the return of Gary Ballance from England duty.

Ballance, currently in England’s Test team, will not be considered for national one-day selection, meaning he should be available for next Thursday’s RL50 quarter-final against Kent at Canterbury and beyond. The availability of Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow is unclear.
