Derbyshire v Yorkshire (Twenty20 Cup)
YORKSHIRE made it third time lucky in the Twenty20 Cup yesterday as they overcame Derbyshire by eleven runs at Chesterfield.
But they were dealt injury concerns to England captain Michael Vaughan and left-arm spinner David Wainwright, who bowed out with a stiff neck and a left hand injury respectively.
England captain Vaughan injured his neck in the middle of a 22-ball innings of 31 - his highest score in Twenty20. And Wainwright was replaced mid-over by Craig White after a Rikki Clarke thunderbolt split his webbing.
Anthony McGrath hit his Twenty20 personal best of 72 not out off 42 balls to help the Tykes to a competitive 169 for five before being one of five wicket takers.
"We definitely needed this win," said coach Martyn Moxon.
"Had we lost three out of three, we would have been staring down the barrel."
The Tykes, having won the toss and electing to bat, made a frustrating start. They were struggling to pierce the field, despite Andrew Gale taking six off the first two balls.
White was bowled, having an ugly heave, by Charl Langeveldt in the third over with the score on nine.
Gale finally got himself going with a few lusty blows, but was smartly caught at long on by Langeveldt off Rikki Clarke (2- 32) for 25 to leave the score at 35 for two in the seventh.
Vaughan was a slow starter on a stodgy track, though he soon managed to pull Clarke for a big six over long leg and sweep Nayan Doshi for four, the former shot being the cause of his neck problem.
But he was one of two wickets to fall in three overs immediately after the mid-way point.
Vaughan was caught at deep square leg off the medium pace of Wavell Hinds, while Jacques Rudolph was run out for five at the non-striker's end, to leave the score 80 for four in the 13th.
At that stage things were looking bleak for the visitors, who had so far failed to make full use of the small Queen's Park ground.
But McGrath did exactly that.
He was the dominant partner in a spectacular fifth wicket stand of 69 with Gerard Brophy (13).
They took 49 off the 14th, 15th and 16th overs, while the vicecaptain walloped three fours and six sixes.
Yorkshire's nemesis Greg Smith, who hit a ton at Headingley on Thursday, looked to have put the hosts on their way to victory with 68 off 42 balls.
But when he was run out by Matthew Hoggard in the 13th over of the reply, Yorkshire's first win edged closer.
Tim Bresnan, White, who only bowled one ball, Rich Pyrah, Darren Gough and McGrath all claimed wickets as the Phantoms reached 158 for six.
Wainwright could be out for several weeks, while Vaughan is a doubt to play against two-time champions Leicestershire at Grace Road tomorrow.
