Yorkshire v Nottinghamshire (Twenty20 Cup)
YORKSHIRE are still not off the mark in the Twenty20 Cup after a four wicket defeat to Nottinghamshire at Headingley last night.
The White Rose county have now lost consecutive North Division home games, despite a much improved performance in a rain affected 15 over tie.
This was an enthralling clash as the 2006 finalists chased down 142 with four balls to spare thanks to 40's from Will Jefferson and Australian Adam Voges.
Anthony McGrath top scored for the Tykes with 32 in their 141-8, while Rich Pyrah finished with 3-28 from three overs.
Yorkshire lost their first wicket in the third over when Andrew Gale skied Charlie Shreck to mid-on for just six off 11 balls to leave the score at 12-1.
That brought Michael Vaughan to the crease. He whacked an encouraging 17 off eight balls, including two sixes over extra cover and over deep backward square leg.
He was dropped on nine by Andre Adams at deep cover, but Vaughan went in the same (fifth) over when he was smartly pouched by Samit Patel off Shreck (2-20 from three overs).
White continued the momentum in a third wicket partnership of 34 with McGrath. The veteran all-rounder brought up the 50 with a massive maximum off Mark Ealham, while he also hit two fours in a 24-ball 26. He was finally caught by Adams off the spin of Samit Patel.
White replaced left-arm spinner David Wainwright in the line-up, allowing for a bit more beef with the willow. So with the likes of McGrath, Jacques Rudolph, Tim Bresnan, Adil Rashid and Pyrah all able to exploit the latter overs, things were looking promising at 75-3 in the ninth.
McGrath hit Patel for a straight six, while Rudolph clobbered an Ealham no-ball into the Western Terrace in a 13-ball 23.
Rashid did the same to Adams.
Both the eleventh over and the 13th went for 18. Shreck and Patel, 2-24 from two, were the picks of the Outlaws' bowling.
Despite Bresnan getting Adams in the second over of the visiting reply, 6ft 10inch Jefferson gave Notts a flyer. The former Essex man crunched 40 off 19 balls, including six fours and two sixes, in a rapid-fire second wicket partnership of 63 with Patel (21). But Jefferson and Patel went in successive overs to Vaughan and Gough to leave the game back in the balance again at 69-3 in the seventh.
Pyrah then bowled New Zealand legend Chris Cairns for just five, while helping to put the squeeze on with Bresnan. The tenth and eleventh overs went for just seven runs. He also later got Chris Read, 25 off 18 balls, and Ealham in consecutive balls in the 19th over But Voges (40 not out off 22) completed the win by hitting Mc- Grath for six over square leg.
The Tykes will be looking to get off the mark when they face Derbyshire Phantoms at Chesterfield tomorrow afternoon.
